Abuse Group Exhibition
Sanatorium Gallery
10 September – 20 October 2011

You abuse me… What does it mean to abuse or under which conditions might you abuse something or someone? As a matter of fact, abusing is not possible since originally it includes a contract – abusing occurs within the limits of the restrictions and authorities already given to someone or within the lines drawn for someone by somebody else. Accordingly, there is a contract between two parties, however, it is called abuse since only one party gets harmed from this contract in an unanticipated way. In this sense, indeed the artist is exactly subject to such a contract, too. He/she abuses his/her given conditions or authorities on his/her behalf in a way that the contract has not anticipated. However, differently from that, the abuse by the artist vary from the abuse by something or someone or their being abused: While the artist abuses in one way or the other, he/she also confesses this simultaneously. In any case, this is what makes art a symptomatology according to Deleuze. As Deleuze discusses in the preface of “The Presentation of Sacher Masoch”, what makes someone an artist is the fact that he/she can be both the patient and the doctor of any symptom. We can also consider the exhibition “Abuse” exactly in this way: 7 different artists or spoilsports who use the given conditions on behalf of their own tendencies, namely abuse them. And the thing that brings them side by side on an axis and make them revolve around this axis without losing it is that they confess. The exhibition “Abuse” including works by Sena Başöz, Guido Casaretto, Orhan Cem Çetin, Can Ertaş, Yağız Özgen, Zeyno Pekünlü and Tunca Subaşı will meet the audience at Sanatorium Art Initiative between September 10 – October 20, 2011.
